Homework in fifth grade can be up to 90 minutes per night, including 20 minutes of reading and instrument practice. The assignments are designed to practice what is introduced in the classroom or to expand upon what has been learned.
v Homework is posted on the board every day in each classroom. Students are expected to independently copy those assignments into their student planners and to check the planner each evening to make sure that those assignments have been completed. Expect math and language arts homework on a daily basis.
v If a student does not hand in homework the next day (without a parent note), he/she will receive a note to have a parent sign. This is so that we can all support students (at home and at school) as they learn the routine of doing homework each night.
v Our homework policy will be sent home prior to this, but beginning October 3rd we will begin our rewards and consequences for homework. This includes earning classroom rewards for each week of complete homework, and also staying after school for a detention when homework is not completed (there are also warnings built into this as well).
v During Detention, if the late homework has not been completed yet, he/she will work on that assignment. Otherwise, the student will work on other homework.
vDetentions take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 3:10 p.m. and 5th grade teachers rotate detention coverage. Students will be picked up in front of the main office after serving their detention. If you have a question regarding detention, please contact the teacher who gave your child the detention slip.
